EN — Two-way trade between China and New Zealand reached NZ$10.9 billion in the first quarter of 2026, according to data released by the Chinese General Administration of Customs on June 3. Chinese exports to New Zealand surged 14.2% year-on-year to NZ$6.7 billion, while New Zealand exports to China held steady at NZ$4.2 billion, up 0.8%.
China's export growth was led by electric vehicles, solar panels, and consumer electronics. EV shipments alone rose 34%, reflecting strong uptake of Chinese brands such as BYD and MG in the New Zealand market. Solar panel imports from China increased 22% as New Zealand's renewable energy rollout accelerates.
On the New Zealand side, dairy exports to China — including milk powder, infant formula, and UHT milk — totalled NZ$1.85 billion, representing 44% of all NZ goods exports to China. Meat exports declined 3.2% to NZ$780 million as Chinese domestic pork production continued to recover, but forestry product exports rose 5.1% to NZ$590 million.
"The composition of trade is evolving," noted NZ China Council executive director Alistair Crozier. "We're seeing a clear shift from pure commodity exports toward more balanced two-way flows, with Chinese manufactured goods gaining significant market share in New Zealand."
